The planting of cocoa was done with a spacing of 2.7 x 5.4 m in a twelve year old areca garden of 2.7 x 2.7 m spacing at CPCRI Seed Farm, Kidu during 1991. The growth characters viz., plant height, stem girth, spread of canopy, height at jorquette and number of branches were recorded from the second year of planting for five consecutive years. Significant differences were noticed among the hybrids and parents in respect of stem girth, height of the plant and spread of canopy. The hybrid II-67 x NC 29/66 recorded consistently good growth, followed by the cross II-67 x NC42/ 94. Maximum vigour with higher heterotic effects for the vegetative traits was observed in II-67 x NC29/66 and 1-21 x NC29/66 crosses. The hybrid II-67 x NC29/66 registered highest pod value of 47.86 g and least pod index of 21.72 per cent. The cross II-67 x NC 42/94 and the parent II-67 also exhibited higher pod values and low pod indices. Yield traits viz., number of pods per tree and dry bean weight also showed significant variation among the hybrids and parents. There was increasing trend in dry bean weight and production of pods over the years. The highest cumulative pod yield and dry bean weight was 191 pods per tree and 7.489 kg dry beans per tree, respectively in the cross II-67 x NC 29/66 for five years from fourth year after planting. Maximum heterosis for yield trait was seen in the hybrids II-67 x NC29/66 and II-67 x NC42/94. The clone II-67 was the common parent for both the high yielding hybrids identified in this study, suggesting its usefulness as the best combiner for exploiting heterosis for growth and yield traits. Hybrids II-67 x NC29/66 and ll-67x NC42/94 are found to be most promising and the same could be exploited for commercial cultivation.Item Evaluation of Germplasm for Yield Traits in Arecanut (Areca catechu L.)(2001) Ananda, K.S.Item Evaluation of microsatellite markers for genetic diversity analysis among different accessions of arecanut (Areca catechu L.)(2012-11) Bharath, B.G.; Ananda, K.S.; Rajesh, M.K.; Nagaraja, N.R.; Rijith, J.Item Exploitation of a dwarf mutant in arecanut breeding(2007-02) Ananda, K.S.Item Exploitation of heterosis for yield and nut characters in dwarf hybrids of arecanut (Areca catechu L.)(2007-02) Ananda, K.S.Hybrids involving Hirehalli Dwarf and released varieties of Arecanut namely, Mangala, Sumangala, Sreemangala and Mohitnagar were wanted for yield performance and nut characters. The experiment was laid out with eight hybrids including reciprocals along with five parents at the CPCRI Regional Station, Vittal in 1992 in an RBD with three replications in a plot size of 8 plants. Yield traits viz., number of nuts produced and fresh weight of nuts (kg) per palm were recorded for 4 consecutive years from 1996-97 to 1999-2000. Nut components traits namely fresh nut weight (g), length and breadth of nuts (cm), dry nut weight (g), dry kernel weight (g), kernel length and breadth (cm) were recorded in 1998-99 season and recovery of chali from fresh nut was also worked out for the same. Heterosis for the hybrids was also measured by taking mid parental value in respect ofeno. of nuts/palm, weight of nuts/palm and also nut characters. Analysis of the data revealed the significant differences among the hybrids and parents for the characters studied. Hybrid H.Dwarf x Sumangala showed high yielding tendency in the early years of bearing (349.25 nuts/palm/year) followed by crosses Mangala x H.Dwarf and H.Dwarf x Mohitnagar (269.67 and 267.05 nuts/palm/year, respectively). While the highest fresh nut yield of 12.08 kg per/palm/year was noticed in the parent Mohitnagar. Among the crosses, Hirehalli Dwarf x Sumangala and Mohitnagar x H.Dwarf showed promising trend in yield by recording 9.14 and 8.91 kg of fresh nut weight/palm/year, respectively. The maximum heterosis of 53.32 per cent and 96.18 per cent for the number of nuts/palm and fresh nut weight/palm was noticed in the cross Mangala x H.Dwarf. While Mohitnagar x H.Dwarf and Mangala x H.Dwarf exhibited higher heterotic effects for most of the nut characters. Over all, H.Dwarf x Sumangala and Mohitnagar x H.Dwarf were found to be promising in yield in the initial years of bearing. Parents Sumangala, Mangala and Mohitnagar have been the common parents with H. Dwarf for high yielding hybrids suggesting its usefulness as best combiners for exploiting heterosis for economically important traits of arecanut.Item Farmers' Participatory Demonstration On Arecanut Based Cropping System -A Success Story(2017) Jaganathan, D.; Nagaraja, N.R.; Jose, C.T.; Rajkumar; Ananda, K.S.; Thamban, C.Item Field evaluation of exotic cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) accessions(2007-02) Bhat, V.R.; Ananda, K.S.Exotic cacao clones obtained from Kew Botanical Garden, UK were evaluated for their field performance at CPCRI Regional Station, Vittal since 1991. The experiment blocks were laid out in RBD with two replications in a low-lying plot with sandy loam soil exposed to water stagnation for a period of six months every year. Growth measurements and the dry bean yield over four years (two each in their pre and post-yield stabilised age) have been included for various statistical analyses like ANOVA, Principal component, Correlation and Stability indices. Clones differed significantly in parameters like stem girth, weights of pruned biomass, number of cherelles and in dry bean yield. Na 242 clones showed the maximum bean yield with acceptable consistency indicated by CV (41.64%) while having had a moderate weight of pruned biomass of 3.770 kg. Most efficient lines have been those which produced more number of pods and dry beans from a small to moderate canopy. Number of cherelles (99.5%), stem girth and canopy volume (90.60%) contributed to the maximum variance observed through the first two principal components. Strong dependence of bean yield on cherelle number, branch number and stem girth has been indicated.
