    In Vitro Interaction of Antagonistic Fungi with Thielaviopsis Paradoxa, the Pathogen of Coconut Stem Bleeding Disease

    In vitro interaction of three antagonistic fungi, viz., Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma harzianum and T. viride with four isolates of Thielaviopsis paradoxa (deSeynes) von Hohnel, the causal agent of stem bleeding disease of coconut was studied. Three methods of inoculation, viz., (I) T. paradoxa inoculated 12 hrs before the inoculation of antagonistic fungus; (2) both T. paradoxa and antagonistic fungus were simultaneously inoculated, and (3) T. paradoxa inoculated 12 hrs after the inoculation of the antagonistic fungus were tested. Minimum growth inhibition of different isolates of T. paradoxa was observed when T. paradoxa was inoculated 12 hrs before the inoculation of the antagonist and maximum growth inhibition of T. paradoxa was observed when T. paradoxa was inoculated 12 hrs after the inoculation of the antagonistic fungus. Among the three antagonistic fungi tested, an isolate of Trichoderma viride exerted maximum growth inhibition (90%) of the pathogen.

    Studies on mycotoxic properties of Eucalyptus species on Thielaviopsis paradoxa (de seynes) von hohnel, the stem bleeding pathogen of coconut

    Stem bleeding disease caused by Thielaviopsis paradoxa (de Seynes) von Hohnel is one of the important diseases of coconut reported from all the coconut growing countries of the world. Antifungal effect of Eucalyptus against the pathogen was studied under in vitro conditions by poisoned food technique and under in vivo conditions in detached coconut leaf petioles. Eucalyp oil (0.6%) completely inhibited both mycilial growth and spore germination of the pathogen under it1 vitro conditions. Ten cent acetone leaf extract of Eucalyptus exerted 82.0 per cent growth inhibition of the pathogen at 24 hrs after inoculation. Germination of endoconidia was inhibited to the extent of 60 per cent by 10 per cent leaf extract while chlamydospore germination was completely inhibited by one per cent leaf extract under in vitro conditions. Under in vivo conditions, Eucalyptus oil exerted complete inhibition of lesion formation due to the pathogen in detached coconut leaf petioles after 15 days of inoculation.
