    EFFECT OF APPLICATION OF FERTILIZERS THROUGH DRIP IRRIGATION ON YIELD OF OIL PALM

    Oil Palm is recognised as the major source ofvegetable oil with an average oil yield level of 4to6tons perhectare.Howeyer,thecrophasheavyIlutrientdemandand highdegree ofsensitivity.. to major nutrients like N, P and K. Nevertheless, considering the importance of this crop as a potential long term source of edible oil, a field inve§tigation was conducted with a view to study the effect ofapplication of major nutdents through d'fi"p irrigation on yield oftenera oil palm in Konkan coastal region ofMaharashtra. Six different dosage offertilizers were followed through drip system by means of venturi and compared with fertilizer dose of 1200: 600: 2700 g NPKI PalmNear through soil application. The experiment was carried out on 18 years old tenera oil palm orchard. The results of the pooled yield for three years by considering first three years after introduction of fertigation as a transition period indicated that fertilizers @ 1200: 600: 1800 g NPKlpalm/year through six equal splits in a year in the form of Urea, Diammonium Phosphate and Muriate of potash through feritgation recorded highest bunch weight (25.0 kg/ bunch), highest number of fresh fruit bunches (5.2 bunches/palm/year) and 18.8 tons of fresh fruit bunch yield.

    EVALUATION OF OIL PALM HYBRIDS FOR PRECOCITY IN KONKAN CONDITIONS OF MAHARASHTRA

    Oil palm hybrids of Dura X Pisifera, were evaluated under Konkan conditions of Mahar'ashtra for three year's from 2013 to 2015. Significant var'iation for number of leaves, weight of bunch and yield of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) was recorded. Among the hybrids NRCOP4 and NRCOP-5 registered minimum height (2.4 m) during the year 2015 and maximum sex ratio above 50 percent. The average sex ratio for' population was 49.2 per cent. The hybrid NRCOP-2, NRCOP-8 and NRCOP-5 had more number of female flowers than male flowers. There was significant variation among hybrids for leaf production and for FFB yield. The hybrid NRCOP-2 r'ecorded highest yield during 2015 (12.8 t/ha-I) and average of7.3 tonnes per hectare over the years. Among the r'emaining hybrids NRCOP-l (9.7 t/ha-l), NRCOP-8 (9.6 t/ha-I) and NRCOP-9 (9.5 t/ha-I) were also found promising for FFB yield during 2015, Three years average perfor'mance exhibited that NRCOP-2 was most pr'omising hybr'id followed by NRCOP-8, NRCOP-9, NRCOP-6 and NRCOP-7 under Konkan agro-c1imatic conditions of Maharashtra.

    Performance of medicinal and aromatic plants as intercrops in coconut plantations in Konkan region of Maharashtra

    A field experiment was conducted at Regional Coconut Research Station, Bhatye, Ratnagiri (AICRP on Palms) during 2006-2011 to develop appropriate cropping system with medicinal and aromatic plants as intercrops compatible with coconut. The experiment consisted ‘shatavari’ (Asparagus racemosus), ‘adulasa’ (Adhatoda vasica), arrowroot (Maranta arundincea), lemon grass (Cymbopogum citratus) and citronella (Cymbopogum winterianus) replicated four times in randomized block design. The yield of different medicinal/aromatic plants was maximum in lemon grass (31 t ha-1) followed by citronella (22 t ha-1), arrowroot (16 t ha-1), adulsa (2.1 t ha-1) and shatavari (0.8 t ha-1). The yield of intercrops in terms of coconut equivalent yield was higher with lemongrass (7750 nuts ha-1) followed by arrowroot (6000 nuts ha-1), adulasa (4725 nuts ha-1), citronella (4125 nuts ha-1) and shatavari (3500 nuts ha-1). The yield of coconut increased from 12 to 21 per cent after planting the intercrops. The net return was maximum in coconut + lemongrass (Rs. 96,200/ - per ha) followed by coconut + arrowroot (Rs. 93,200/- per ha), coconut + shatavari (Rs. 83,300/- per ha), coconut + adulasa (Rs. 78,300/- per ha) and coconut + citronella (Rs. 73,800/- per ha). Further, it was observed that shatavarin and saponins in shatavari, alkaloid in adulasa, citranol in citronella and sugar in arrowroot were higher with intercropping whereas citral in lemon grass slightly reduced with intercropping. Considering the performance of different medicinal crops as intercrop and market demand, arrowroot, lemongrass, adulasa, citronella and shatavari have been recommended as intercrops in coconut plantation for Konkan region of Maharashtra.

    Variability and Correlation Studies for Nut Characters in Coconut

    Thirteen genotypes of coconut (Cocos nuclfera L) were studeid for various attributes of not sizeand yield. The population under study exhibited significant variation for all the characters except kernel thickness. In general, the size and weight of nut has inverse correlaton with nuts/palm. The correlation studies further, revealed that the Important characterslike size, volume, weight of copra and oil yield are mutually exclusive. Thus, the held performance In terms of copra yield or oil yleld/ha appearrs to be complex one. The characters ulz., volume of husked nut, weight of husked nut, shell and kernel are under controll of additive gene action whereas the characters weight of husk and copra were found to be govemmed by additive as well as non-additive gene action. Inspite of the complex mutual relationship of number of nuts/ palm, the genotypes Philippines, Lakshadweep ordinary, T x D (Orange) and Pratap could be rated as elite yielding types considering the copra and oil yield.
