Item A Coconut palm producing pigmy-size barren fruits(2007-02-08) Nair, R.B.One palm in Car Nicobar Island was found to produce only sterile male and female flowers with no button shedding. The pigmy-size barren fruits attained a maximum size of 9x5 cm, and a volume of 115 cc after 12 months of growth. All the fruits possessed two internal supernumerary whorls of three alternating carpels each, and the embryo sac was under-developed. The male flowers also had three whorls of alternating supernumerary boat-like fleshy sepals, the anthers dehisced normally, but were mostly devoid of pollen.Item Effect of the yellow leaf disease on the plant characters of Areca catechu L.(1970) Nair, R.B.; Aravindakshan, M.Item Effect of the yellow leaf disease on the plant characters of areca catechu l.(1970) Nair, R.B.; Aravindakshan, M.Item Effect of yellow leaf disease on the physiology of areca palms (Areca catechu L)(2007-02-08) Nair, R.B.; Aravindakshan, M.Effect of the yellow leaf disease on the physiology of areca palms was studied by estimation of the contents of amino acids, organic acids, protein, chlorophylls and pH of healthy and diseased plants. In the leaves the contents of cystine, aspartic acid and lysine increased considerably when the phnts became diseased; the increase in the case of arginine and methionine was only slight- Threonine suffered a drastic reduction due to the disease; phenylalanine and alanine also showed reductions- - ..... In inUorescnence the contents of cystine, glutamic acid and serine increased considerably when diseased, the increase being smaller in the caseof lysine, asparagine, arginine, methionine and fay droxy-proline. Reduction with disease occurred in the case of histidine, glyctne, tryptophan, tyrosine and valine. In the stem all the five amino acids detected viz., serine, arginine, threonine, alanine and hydroxy-proline suffered reduction when disease set In the roots the chief amino acids were cystine, histidine and proline and all these suffered a set back when the plants became diseased; proline was found specific to roots. The contents of the organic acids viz. nlalic acid, tartaric acid, oxalic aeid, succinic acid and tannic acid increased with the disease. Higher protein contents in diseased over the healthy palms were seen in leaf and inflorescence. pH of sap was not affected significantly by the disease-Item Floral biology and breeding of clove (Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb)(2007-02) Nair, R.B.; Sadanandan, A.K.; Unnithan, K.R.G.In clove the flowers are bisexual. The male phase starts along with the opening of the flowers. The stamens shed after two days. The female phase starts soon after the male phase. In genera] inbreeding is common in clove. But controlled cross-breeding is also possible by adopting sophisticated techniques. The maximum receptivity of the stigma is found to be on the 5th day after opening of the flower. The best period for pollination is between the 4th and 6th day after opening. The highest fruit set obtained was 46.66 %. A fertilized flower takes about three months for maturity. Illumination ofplants throughout the night increased not only the vigour of the seedlings but also increased the chlorophyll fractions, besides promoting the initiation of inflorescence primordhim.Item Variation in Glucose Content in Andamans Coconut(1983) Nair, R.B.; Sadanandan, A.K.Tall and Dwarf palms did not show any significant differences between them in the glucose content of 6-month old tender nut water. The total variation ranged from 2.0% to 6.9%. No correlation was observed between glucose content and different colour groups (types) in Tall palms. It is suggested that Nicobar Islands possibly form part of the original home of both Arecanut and Coconut shared by other SB.
