    Attractants-an aid in red palm weevil management

    The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus F.)> is an enemy of young coconut palms. It bores into the tissues and ultimately kills the palm. Being a hidden enemy, timely detection is necessary for effecting control. Traps and attractants, by which adults can be trapped and kilted have proved to be effective components of integrated pest management. Log traps consisting of tender coconut stems, 50 cm long and spilt longitudinally were found to be superior to metal traps. The cut surfaces were treated with candidate attractants. Macerated fruits, molasses (jaggery from sugarcane) and toddy, singly or in combination, were die test materials. Along with these, yeast and/or acetic acid was mixed to ascertain whether the same will enhance the attractiveness. Out of sixteen combinations tested in the field, logs treated with coconut toddy+yeast+acetic acid were the best, followed by coconut toddy+ acetic acid, pineapple + molasses+yeast, pineapple + molasses, and molasses + yeast. The use of coconut log traps treated with the above combination is recommended as one of the effective components of integrated pest management.

    Biology, bionomics and control of Proutista moesta Westwood (Hemiptera : Derbidae): a vector of yellow leaf disease of areca palms

    The plant hopper, Proutista moesta Westwood (Homoptera : Derbidae) is a vector of Yellow Leaf Disease(YLD) of areca palms and a putative vector of spear rot disease of coconut. P. moesta breeds on decaying materials. Life-history was completed within a period of 30 to 70 days. Maximum longevity obtained was 62 days. A single female laid on an average 44 ± 4 eggs. The average sex ratio was 1:0.59. Plant hoppers concentrate on the fully mature yellow coloured outer leaves of areca palms. Survey revealed that no YLD garden was independent of P. moesta. Highest population was recorded during June and the lowest during November. Seasonal abundance of P. moesta was governed by both biotic and abiotic factors. Spraying with monocrotophos was found to be effective for the management of the vector. Under field conditions, a Hymenopteran parasitoid, Paraphylax sp. was found suppressing the plant hopper population especially during the months of December to February.

    The coconut leaf-eating caterpillar, Nephantis serinopa Meyrick, a review

    Works conducted on the life history and habits, seasonal abundance, natural enemies, biological control, chemical control, and integrated control of coconut leaf-eating caterpillar, Nephan-tis serinopa Meyrick are reviewed. Problem areas on the control of this serious pest in India and Sri Lanka are then identified. Additional studies on the fields for each aspects of the pest are suggested to come up with possible source of materials necessary in formulating a feasible integrated control measures which are both economical and effective.

    Effect of nutrition on the longevity of Bracon brevicornis Wesmael (Hymenoptera : Braconidae) a larval parasitoid of the coconut caterpillar Nephantis serinopa Meyrick

    Bracon brevicornis Wesmael (Braconidae) is one of the important indigenous larval parasitoid of Nephantis serinopa Meyrick, a serious pest of the coconut palm in India. The adult parasitoids are usually fed on diluted honey in the laboratory. The present study assesses the efficacy of different sugars such as xylose, dextrose, sorbose, mannose, mannitol, sucrose and raffinose in comparison with honey and distilled water in increasing longevity of B. brevicornis. The parasitoids were fed daily with 20% solutions of sugars and honey and distilled water as droplets on wax - coated paper. Data revealed that honey is the best food for promoting longer life of the parasitoid, the mean longevity being 10.4 days for males and 30.1 days for females. This was followed by sucrose and dextrose in the order of efticacy. The others are not superior to distilled water. Between males and females, the latter had a significantly longer life span in all cases and more so with honey and sucrose.

    Incidence of myllocerus cur vicornis (f.) In relation to nutritional status of coconut palms

    Myllocerus curvicornis (F.) is a new pest on coconut. It was observed damaging coconut foliage. This paper presents-the observation of its abundance in relation to nutritional status of Dwarf x Tall palms. Results revealed that pest intensity was significantly higher in N2P2K2 Plots man to N1P1K1; the precentage of infestation being 54.68%, 71.21% and 68.31% for N1P1K1, N2P2K2 and N3P3K3, respectively.
