Being an internal feeder the weevil incidence is detected at a very late stage when the tree has succumbed to weevil attack. Hence conventional control operations may not be very effective. The biotypical variability ofthe four populations collectedfrom different parts ofIndia showed that the populations are genetically different and strainal variability exists between them. Variations in sex ratio and deleterious genetic effect were observed in the crosses and reciprocal crosses. The weevil has a very high fitness due to high production potential and the absence ofeffoctive parasites, predators and pathogens. In spite of the high fitness, in endemic areas weevil population tend to remain at certain levels ofintensity. This may be due to certain limiting factors.Item The coconut leaf-eating caterpillar, Nephantis serinopa Meyrick, a review(2007-02-08) Ramachandran, C.P.; Ponnamma, K.N.; Abdulla Koya, K.M.; Kurian, C.Works conducted on the life history and habits, seasonal abundance, natural enemies, biological control, chemical control, and integrated control of coconut leaf-eating caterpillar, Nephan-tis serinopa Meyrick are reviewed. Problem areas on the control of this serious pest in India and Sri Lanka are then identified. Both insecticides at recommended doses were found to be highly toxic to all the laboratory bred parasites except BHC to bethylids. Malathion was found to be more toxic to parasites than BHC when mean over periods were analysed.
