All the exotic cultivars tested were found Susceptible to the disease with varying degrees of intensity. However, the coconut culrivar San Ramon recorded significantly lower disease incidence followed by Guam, St. Vincent and Kenya. The infection of leaf rot incited by Bipolaris halodes (Drechsler) Shoem. was also low in these cultivars.Item Respiratory rate and nut yield in root (wilt) diseased coconut palms(1978-06) Michael, K.J.Respiratory changes and nut yield were studied in coconut palms infected by root (wilt) disease. Respiration rate was significantly higher in palms in the advanced stage of the disease as compared to that in healthy ones. A correlation of -0.54 was recorded between rate of respiration and nut yield.Item Root (wilt) disease-Resume of work done since 1964(1969-02) Lal, S.B.The root (wilt) disease of coconuts in Kerala has been spreading and now infects about 250 thousand hectares of coconut plantations. It is more intense in poorly aerated land. Flaccidity of leaflets is the primary symptom of the disease, while yellowing, necrosis, nut fall etc. complete the syndrome. The disease is probably caused by a virus-like pathogen which is soil borne and transmitted by an insect as well as mechanically. Mode of spread in nature is not fully understood. The cowpea indicator host has been very erratic and seems to be highly sensitive to prevailing weather. Water stagnation or high water table seems to play an important role in the initiation and spread of the disease. There is a gross derangement in the physiological processes of infected palms. Eradication of diseased trees to check the further spread of the disease in new areas, as well as to re-establish healthy coconut gardens in diseased areas, is being experimented.Item Suppression of plasma membrane H+- ATPase in root (wilt) diseased coconut palms (cocos nucifera l.) impairs stomatal opening and phloem transport(2001-01) Mathews T. Thelly; Sharmila, L.B.; Mohankumar, C.Plasma membrane H+-ATPase, couples ATP hydrolysis to proton transport thereby establishing the driving force for solute transport into and out of plant cells. A sound depletion of H+-ATPase activity was noticed in diseased palms from that of healthy ones. The suppression of plasma membrane H+-ATPase in diseased palm was further substantiated by the impaired functioning of stomata and the disintegration of phloem and tracheary elements as observed under Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results indicate the functional imbalance of electro chemical gradient created by H+-ATPase in the leaf cells. Moreover, the undifferentiated shrunken leaf tissues of diseased palms clearly clarify the loss of turgidity and cell wall plasticity due to suppression of H+-ATPase
