Abstract
A technique for quantifying the severity of yellow leaf disease of arecanut (betelnut palm, Areca catechu L.: Arecaceae) was evolved based on three easily recognisable foliar symptoms, yellowing, necrosis, and reduction in crown size. Due weights were assigned to the symptoms based on the frequency of occurrence of these symptoms in the natural population of arecanut palms growing under various ecological conditions in Kerala and Karnataka (South India). The disease index I for a palm was worked out using the formula, I=(Y+N/L+R)*10, \\ / where Y and N are the sum of grade points for yellowing and necrosis, L is 50 % number of leaves in the crown, and R is the grade point for the reduction in crown size for the palm as a whole.
