Abstract
A wide array of fungi attack coconut palm causing different degrees of tosses. Among these, a few fungi are causative agents of important diseases inflicting either death of the palm or gradual decline in vigour and/or yield. The diseases are described under: (1) major diseases, (2) diseases which are likely to become major in future, and (3) minor diseases. The important diseases described are bud rot, basal stem rot, stem bleeding, lethal bole rot, leaf rot etc. The paper also gives an account of the world distribution of important fungal diseases and losses caused by them. The symptomatology, etiology, epidemiology and disease management of major diseases are described in brief. The future lines of work are also outlined at the end. A coordinated approach in research on coconut diseases on a regional basis should receive attention so that there is free exchange of information and expertise between these countries. Investigations on disease management including reaction of varieties to important diseases of coconut should be a priority in the research programmes of different coconut research institutes.
