They possess a number of specific features that testify to their high physiological activity. S-cells lie in the way of the substances moving from the conductive system to the developing sporangia and probably transform them, serving as a peculiar barrier for some of them. Maximal activity of S-cells coincides in time with the differentiation of the arches-porium and sporocyte development.
